KMM Youth Character Education

KMM Youth Character Education

Part of teaching children, whether it be in public/private school, martial arts, sports, dance, art, etc... is to make sure you are also teaching them how to be a good person. In self defense or martial arts for youth we play a bigger part than just teaching how to punch, kick, and defend against threats, we build their character. Things like respect, modesty, courtesy, etc...

At the end of every youth class at Krav Maga Mahopac we do a mat chat with the kids. One of the first words you'll hear them learning about is respect. As we go along we add in other words like modesty, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control, and indomitable spirit. We define these words, we give examples/stories of them, and we go over how we can practice them on a daily basis. Just like punching, kicking, and defending, these are perishable skills. If not talked about or practiced they will forget. The good news is that you don't need ANYTHING to practice these life skills. Showing respect is something that can be trained on a daily basis, along with the rest of our character education.

Here are a list of some of the character education words we use in class and simple definitions for a child to remember and understand.

Respect- Treat others the way you like to be treated.

Modesty- Be humble, do not brag.

Courtesy- Be nice, polite, and respectful.

Integrity- Don't steal, don't cheat, don't lie.

Perseverance- Never give up.

Self control- Control your mind and your body.

Indomitabe spirit- Approach every task with a positive attitude.
